It is the mission of the Coronado Unified School District, in concert with the Coronado Police Department, to provide a safe, secure, and orderly teaching and learning environment for all students and staff. The presence of a School Resource Officer supports our shared purpose while improving relations between the Coronado Police Department and youth throughout the community.
The placement of a school resource officer on the campuses of Coronado Unified School District was established for the 2014-15 school year. An ad hoc committee, between members of CUSD and the City of Coronado, determined that the assignment would promote safety and security while presenting an opportunity to create a positive context for students to interact with the CPD.
There are two standing programs that the SRO facilitates across CUSD.
Fourth Graders at VES, SSE, Sacred Heart, and Christ Church, as well as 6th Graders at CMS experience the G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program. This national program teaches children life skills that are useful in making choices and decisions and in setting goals for their future. G.R.E.A.T. shows children how to interact with others, communicate, resolve conflict, and manage anger through role-playing scenarios and structured activities. G.R.E.A.T also combats bullying issues and encourages students to ‘say something’ if and when they ‘see something’. The feedback from teachers and administrators is positive.
In 2016-17, the School Resource Officer educated over 400 Coronado youth through the G.R.E.A.T. program. This year, current CHS freshmen represent the first class of students that received training as 6th graders. The relationships established three years ago have strengthened connections between the Coronado Police Department and the students at CHS.

Students at Coronado High School can participate in the Police Explorers program. Explorers meet weekly with Police Advisors and work on law enforcement scenarios that police officers commonly encounter in the field. Youth Explorers prepare for ride-alongs, practice radio codes, drill, physical training, and discuss current events happening in the law enforcement community. The program builds self-confidence and character, leadership skills, and offers opportunities to serve the community.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was established and formalized in Fall of 2016 to outline agreed upon responsibilities and expectations in order to achieve mutual objectives between the Coronado Unified School District and the Coronado Police Department. Revisions to the MOU were added (below) in August 2017 to clarify expectations for communication between site administration and the school resource officer.
Revisions to Memorandum of Understanding:
1. To provide information by:
d. When it pertains to preventing a disruption that would, if ignored, place students, faculty or staff at risk of harm, the SRO will mitigate the disruption and report to school administration. In all other cases, disciplining students is a School District responsibility, and the SRO will refer information regarding students violating the code of conduct to the principal or principal’s designee where school discipline can be meted out.
8. Chain of Command:
b. In the performance of SRO duties, the SRO shall coordinate a formal, monthly meeting and communicate with the principal or the principal’s designee of the school(s) to which they are assigned.
The Chief of Police and the CUSD Superintendent meet regularly to discuss strategies and programs that align with our shared mission to provide a safe, secure, and orderly teaching and learning environment for all students and staff. We believe the presence of a School Resource Officer supports our shared purpose while improving relations between the Coronado Police Department and youth throughout the community.
