7.1  Adoption of New Secondary Online Courseware Instructional Materials for Coronado High School

Background Information:
Complying with Board Policy 6161.1, textbooks recommended for adoption by a textbook selection committee will be displayed and available for public inspection at the District Office. Coronado High School has been using Edgenuity as its online courseware provider for approximately the last six years.

Reports:

Over the course of the last several months, a team of Coronado High School administrators and teachers from a variety of disciplines researched current online courseware products to serve the online credit recovery needs of Coronado High School.  A committee of Miriam Tullgren (CHS/ Palm Assistant Principal), Lindsay Goldman (Online learning counselor), Matthew Stoever (English and ELD teacher), Heather Bice (English and Credit Recovery Teacher), Amanda Vanasse (Science and Credit Recovery Teacher), and Afsaneh Safaie (counselor Palm/CHS) did an in-depth review of online courseware options. The course content was also reviewed by Nancy McGreevy (Mathematics Teacher), Shane Schmeichel (CoSA Director), Kristine Johnston (Counselor), Claudia Gallant (Senior Director of Learning), Lori Williams (Parent), Joslin Humphrey (Student), Zyyad Roache (Student), and Salma Navarrette (Student).

Rationale: The needs of online learning has evolved over the years at Coronado High School and Palm Academy. With the shift from Coronado Pathways Charter School to the CHS SOLO program to strictly credit recovery, the needs of courseware have shifted as well.  Instructors feels that the rigor of content in the current online learning courseware does not match that of instruction in their classroom. Students feel that engagement and learning is low instructionally in the current online courseware, and assignments are easily compromised.  Surveyed teachers shared that fidelity and investment is low in the current online courseware.  The committee reviewed online courseware from BYU Independent Study, Apex Learning, UC Scout, and Edgenuity., choosing Apex Learning as the final choice.

Credentialed teachers reviewed Apex Learning course content in math, English and science and felt that the content and rigor was appropriate for adoption in credit recovery.  Teachers felt that the instructional videos, tutorials, text and comprehension check activities supported engagement and student learning.  Teachers noted that the key vocabulary bank and study guides that accompany each unit provide structure and accountability for student learning.  Further, printable assignments and assessments aid in fidelity of work completion.
