Discipline Action Guide:

As per the direction of the Governing Board in the August 2020 board meeting, the district Discipline Action Guide (DAG) has been updated.   The most substantive change to the 2020-2021 DAG is the addition of  the behavior infraction "use of biased language specifically related to race, religion, sexual orientation, ability, or other discriminatory language." (Section:  Verbal and Written Aggression, page 15)  An administrator will use this when a student uses racial or ethnic slurs or derogatory epithets.  Based on the discipline matrix, this infraction may have a Level 1, 2, or 3 response depending on the individual circumstance.  All district administrators have received the revised copy of the DAG and it may be viewed on our district website.

Board Policy Workshop:

On September 9, 2020, the CUSD Governing Board participated in an Equity Board Policy Workshop.  The workshop was facilitated by Fabiola Bagula Ph.D, Senior Director of Equity with the San Diego County Office of Education.  The purpose of the workshop was to review the sample CSBA Board Policy 0415 and to tailor it to the unique needs of CUSD.  The new Equity board policy will be adopted at the September 10, 2020 board meeting.

Village Elementary Completes Year-1 Diagnostic Center Project:

The Diagnostic Center of Southern California partnered with VES in a project to enhance inclusive education practices and increase inclusion time for students with disabilities.  Although the work of the project was cut short due to COVID-related school closures, the team met “virtually” in April to recap the year and plan for next year.  To date, quarterly classroom observations, small group training sessions, two school-wide professional development presentations have been conducted.  Additionally, the Diagnostic Center staff have been available for consultation with VES teachers.  The team summarized the year in the attached report.  We are excited to continue the Diagnostic Center partnership for the 2020-2021 school year to further develop and implement best practices toward inclusive education at Village Elementary.
