7.3  Distance Learning Update (5 min. + Board Discussion)  (Reports)
Reports:

On Friday, May 29th, teacher-facilitated distance learning came to an end. Beginning June 1st, students and families will participate in our Springboard to Summer enrichment activities, providing CUSD staff with two weeks during the contracted year (June 1 - June 12) to engage in professional development in preparation for Fall 2020. This preparation will focus on developing e-Learning units, as our only known at this time is we will need to deliver virtual instruction in the fall, in some capacity. Guiding this preparation is the development of an e-Learning Unit Template for elementary and secondary teachers. Grounded in research on remote learning environments, the linked e-Learning documents below provide our community with a standardized template. Use of these templates ensure continuity while demonstrating that we are delivering optimal instructional experiences in a virtual setting. A strong lesson within a strong unit will incorporate all evidence-based components included in the templates. Having this structure in place will not only protect and help our teachers, but will also provide all students with equitable and accessible curriculum and instruction.

It is important to note that distance learning cannot replicate the content and standards taught in a brick and mortar learning environment. Our teachers will not be able to cover all standards and incorporate all learning activities and lessons during distance learning. The templates provide a ‘thinking’ framework to support teacher planning - focusing on the core standards and essential understandings that will lead to student mastery in each content area.

Staff was also provided a detailed professional learning calendar to guide our work June 1st through June 12th. Time will be structured to provide training and requisite skills in order for teachers to design lessons and units of study, using district resources, within the templates. Activities will align directly to the essential components of the e-Learning templates. Additionally, to assist students and parents with finding needed information in the fall, we have asked educators at the secondary level to use the same PowerSchool template for distance learning. Secondary educators will use the PowerSchool template to populate their first unit lessons and activities. PowerSchool training will be provided during the June professional learning time.

It is our goal for our educators to launch into summer feeling confident and prepared to best meet the needs of our learners in a virtual environment. During this time together in June, teachers will develop one full unit (2-3 weeks in length) within the e-Learning and PowerSchool templates, with corresponding lessons, for implementation in August. Below are the links to the e-Learning templates.
