8.2  Adoption of New College Prep (CP) Chemistry Textbooks for Coronado High School (Information)  (Reports)

Background Information:
Complying with Board Policy 6161.1, textbooks recommended for adoption by a textbook selection committee will be displayed and available for public inspection at the District Office. The last adoption of instructional materials for Chemistry was in 2007.

Reports:

A textbook selection committee, composed of teachers from Coronado High School, reviewed three textbooks for College Prep (CP) Chemistry. The committee identified two texts that align with the updated Next Generation Science Standards adopted by California.

The committee did an in-depth review of the following textbooks for CP Chemistry:

  • California HMH Science Dimension Chemistry in the Earth System. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2020.
  • Experience Chemistry in the Earth System. Pearson, 2021.

A committee comprised of Karoly Tippets-Russell, Amanda Vanasse, Grace Kim, Megan Battle, and Shane Schmeichel recommends the following textbook:

  • Experience Chemistry in the Earth System. Pearson, 2021.

The committee chose this book because it follows the three-year California high school science model adopted by Coronado High School. Additionally, Experience Chemistry follows the California Framework story-line for Chemistry in the Earth System. Students will have access to the digital platform provided by Pearson, as well as, print copies of the consumable texts. The digital platform has various versions of the laboratories to accommodate learners at varying levels. Teachers have the option of 4 different levels of rigor for each of the 30 essential labs.

The department is requesting 150 paper copies of the Experience Chemistry student volumes with digital access for 300 students/year. The 150 paper copies of the two student volumes include a class set of 35 texts for each of the three Chemistry teachers with an additional 15 copies per teacher for students who want to check out a paper copy for home. Also included are three teacher editions and a one-day professional development training for each of the teachers. The textbook adoption price includes an 8-year license to the publisher’s digital content.

  • Chemistry total cost is $82,650.50.

The text is available to preview over the next month.
