7.2  Coronado High School Report on 2020-2021 Bell Schedule (5 min. + Board Discussion)  (Reports)
Reports:

In order to comply with EDC § 47612.5 and BP 6112, which requires 64,800 minutes of instruction in grades nine to twelve, Coronado High School will need to adopt a new bell schedule for the 2020-2021 school year, and beyond.  A comprehensive presentation of the bell schedule options was provided during the March 12, 2020 Board Meeting. In collaboration with CHS administrators, teachers and district office leaders, CUSD recommends adopting an extended 6-period day schedule for the 2020-2021 school year that mirrors the current CHS schedule and includes additional minutes in each instructional period of the day (for compliance). Below is a sample of what the 2020-2021 bell schedule could look like:

Please note, the sample schedule (above) is not the adopted schedule for 2020-21. Our objective is to establish a bell schedule which closely aligns with the current CHS schedule. Our collective focus for next year will be centered around professional development and training necessary for staff to prepare for the 2021-22 bell schedule. We believe introducing change for next year will interfere with and distract from reaching our objective. We will work with staff to determine the final bell schedule and present to the Governing Board and community at the May 14th meeting.

During the 2020-2021 school year, Coronado High School staff will prepare for a significant bell schedule change that is aligned with the following priorities and will be implemented in the 2021-2022 school year: (1) compliance with the existing collective bargaining agreement; (2) budget impact; (3) student flexibility to explore passions and interests, remediate and accelerate; and (4) increase college and career readiness.  Throughout the 2020-21 school year, CHS staff will participate in a series of professional development experiences designed to support a smooth transition to the systems and structures of a new bell schedule. Opportunities will include site visits to neighboring school sites with similar bell schedules, professional development / training on pacing, lesson planning,

Staff will present the Governing Board with a proposed draft of the 2021-22 bell schedule in May, 2020.
