4.1 One School, One Campus Update
In March, 2019, the Governing Board approved the relocation of Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten students back to the main campus at Village Elementary School, effective school year 2020-21. Coronado Unified School District believes the One School, One Campus’ initiative will maximize instructional programs, increase safety and support for our students, teachers and families, and provide budget and operational efficiencies. Action taken by the Governing Board included direction for the Superintendent to provide monthly updates and timelines on efforts made to adequately prepare the facilities, staff, students, and community for the transition.
Facilities
Our transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students will return to the building originally designed to house kindergarten classrooms. Our desire is to create a space where our youngest learners will feel safe and contained, have access to resources on campus (iLAB, library, VAPA room, etc.), and participate in programs which deliberately ‘pair’ peer mentors for reading, math, and SEL supports. Relocation of existing 700 Building occupants are currently taking place as staff prepare, clean, and upgrade classroom and office spaces throughout campus.
Our CUSD Maintenance and Operations team have adjusted timelines in order to take advantage of the mandated school closure. At Village Elementary, a series of projects are underway as we prepare for the relocation of TK/K in the Fall.
The artificial turf surfacing in the 700 Building ‘quad’ was removed and will be replaced by natural grass. Damaged drainage and irrigation systems have been repaired, and mature shade producing trees will be set in existing tree wells. Natural grass and mature trees were part of the original design of this space, and we are excited to restore optional outdoor learning environments for our staff and students.
A TK/K play structure was ordered and will be placed adjacent to the 700 Building. The structure was designed with ADA accessible elements and includes two shade structures to limit sun exposure. ADA accessible rubber surfacing will be installed throughout the structure area.
Angela’s garden will be relocated, expanded, and will include access for VES students and the local service organization/residents. We are interested in establishing a partnership with the Crown Garden Club and/or other Coronado shareholders to make this a treasure for our entire community!
Due to the unanticipated school closures our CUSD Maintenance and Operations team have been able to accelerate projects. Timelines for the remaining facilities projects are listed below:
