Reports:

In the 2018-19 school year, CUSD embarked on a three-year journey to establish a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to support our goal of Every Child, Every Day.  The Multi-Tiered System of Support is an integrated, comprehensive framework that aligns academic, behavioral, and social-emotional learning in a fully integrated system of support for the benefit of all students.  MTSS offers the potential to create needed systematic change through intentional design and redesign of services and supports to quickly identify and match to the needs of all students. (CDE SUMS Initiative)

To date, CUSD has formed a robust committee with representation from each school site.  The committee has met and continues to meet on a monthly basis.  During committee meetings the team has reviewed federal, state, and district data trends.  Teams at each site have identified the priority of behavioral, social-emotional, and academic interventions.  Professional development and trainings have commenced and will continue.  Universal/preventative behavioral and social-emotional trainings have included:

  • Restorative Practices
  • Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS)
  • Sanford Harmony
  • Trauma Informed Practices
  • Signs of Suicide (SOS)
  • Mindfulness
  • Universal Design for Learning
  • Positive Reinforcement systems:  Voyager Crew Cards, Caught Being Awesome, etc.

The MTSS committee also identified the need to update our Discipline Action Guide (DAG) to reflect a revised Guiding Principle:  The purpose of a school-wide positive behavior support and discipline plan is consistent with the principles of safety, responsibility, respectfulness, appreciation of differences, honesty, and lifelong learning.  The new DAG is divided into:

Section One- Introduction

Section Two- A Guide to Using Disciplinary Interventions and Supports

Section Three- Description of Inappropriate and Disruptive Behaviors and Levels of Response

Section Four- Procedures for In-School Suspensions, Out of School Suspensions, Expulsions, and Referrals to Alternative Schools.

Section Five- Data Collection and Monitoring

Appendix A- Glossary of Disciplinary Interventions or Responses

Appendix B- Expulsion Flowchart

The MTSS committee is continuing this important work and will provide the Governing Board with periodic updates.
