DISTRICT ORGANIZATION AND BOARD OPERATION
7.4  Superintendent's Report: Long Range Plan Update (5 min. + Board Discussion)  (Reports)

Background Information:

The Superintendent will provide ongoing updates and progress to the Governing Board regarding objectives identified in the Long Range Plan.

Reports:

1.0 Academic Achievement:

1.2 Identify top research-based instructional practices, models, programs, and resources and provide comprehensive report to the Governing Board which recommends action on the following:

  • TK-5 Instructional Minutes/Schedule

  • TK-5 Curriculum

Last Spring, we engaged in a number of discussions, performed site visits, and conducted an instructional minute study with neighboring districts. This work ultimately led to adjustments to our daily elementary schedules. One notable change was the alignment of instructional minutes Kindergarten through Fifth grade in order to provide additional time and structure for key district initiatives. We believe these changes strengthen the culture and community of our sites by enhancing the amazing academic and enrichment experiences already available to our students.

Math and Science Lab-Based Application - Beginning this year, our elementary students have access to Project Lead the Way curriculum as we develop new innovation lab spaces designed to connect and apply math and science skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Elementary Mathematics Instruction - Our newly adopted math curricula, Bridges, requires additional instructional minutes, and these adjustments provide time to challenge our youngest learners in math.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - In addition to supporting instruction and learning, our new schedule affords time for daily 'meet ups' Kindergarten through 5th grade allowing our teachers and students to nurture a sense of community and strong connections. Student connectedness to school is essential to create a comfortable and safe learning environment for each child, and this time is used to foster relationships between students and their school champions!

In addition to expanded instructional minutes, this new schedule provides structure for daily prep / collaboration and articulation time for all elementary teachers. In addition, designated ‘blocks’ of time have been set to streamline intervention and enrichment supports for students. Please review the attached elementary schedule to review how each grade level is organized daily by both subject and time.

1.4 Integrate programs and experiences which enhance college and career readiness across CUSD.

Through a partnership with Southwestern Community College, students enrolled in our Engineering class at Coronado High School are receiving instruction which will earn them three units of college credit. We are excited about this collaboration and will seek to expand opportunities for our students to earn both high school graduation and UC/CSU transferable credits. These experiences align with State of California college and career readiness goals, potentially save tuition costs for our families, and provide our students access to a broader course of study.

3.0 Support:

3.1 District office staff and departments will provide timely and efficient service to CUSD school sites, measured by clearly defined metrics for accountability and resource allocation.

  • CNS

    • Reach Target Revenue Goals

For the second consecutive year, our Child Nutrition Services program has increased services to our student body while exceeding target revenue goals. This accomplishment is worthy of commendation as our primary vendor ‘Gold Star Foods’ canceled services to CUSD in Fall, 2018. This change in vendor presented obstacles on delivery schedules, continuity of order, and, in some cases, necessitated the need for our amazing CNS team to run to local markets in order to prepare student meals.

  • Human Resources

    • Create & Distribute CUSD ‘Code of Ethics’

Mr. Lyche distributed the CUSD Code of Ethics (link below), created in response to California Education Code requirements, to CUSD administration in August. Site principals are reviewing the Code of Ethics with their respective staff during the first month of school year 2019-20. The document is housed on our website (click here) and is aligned with CUSD Board Policy 4119.

Code of Conduct for Employee-Pupil Interactions

Coronado Unified School District is committed to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students. While the District encourages the cultivation of positive relationships with students, employees are reminded to be mindful of the fine line drawn between being supportive of students and a possible or perceived breach of responsible, ethical behavior.  Click here to view CUSD's Code of Conduct for Employee-Pupil Interactions.
