6.0
INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS & STUDENT ACTIVITIES
6.2  Approval of Recommended Curriculum TK-5 Mathematics  (Action)

Background Information:

In 2010, the California State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS); and in 2013, they modified the standards to reflect recommendations from the California Academic Content Standards Commission.  In 2014, Coronado Unified School District’s Board of Education approved mathematics content shifts in grades TK-5 to align with these standards.

Since 2014, teachers have used supplemental resources and open education resources to align their curriculum and instruction to the standards. In July 2014, CUSD purchased a robust supplemental mathematics curriculum, Ready Common Core. This is the curriculum that teachers are currently using in the classroom, however, with mixed emotions about the program’s rigor, coherence and focus; as well as the instructional practices the curriculum supports.  In 2017-2018, the Learning Department collaborated with the San Diego County Office of Education and gathered feedback from TK-5 teachers to research and recommend one curriculum to pilot during the 2018-2019 school year. In the spring of 2018, a pilot committee was formed.  The pilot committee was comprised of classroom teachers, ELA and Math TOSAs, principals and the Director of Learning.  This committee was charged with evaluating the chosen curriculum in the 2018-2019 school year, implementing the pilot protocols, conducting classroom observations, engaging in an all staff feedback forum, participating in outside district/site visits, and making a recommendation for the formal adoption of an elementary math curriculum.

Reports:

A comprehensive presentation is attached to this report.

The two programs being considered for elementary mathematics are Ready Common Core https://www.curriculumassociates.com/products/ready/mathematics  and Bridges in Mathematics https://www.mathlearningcenter.org/bridges.  Both programs are fully aligned with the CA CCSS Mathematics Framework, have coherent progression across grade levels, focus on the key concepts at each grade level, and foster reasoning/sense-making in mathematics.  These two programs are also the highest rated on Ed Reports.  A third program is not being considered, as there is not another comprehensive curriculum with the same level of focus, coherence, and rigor that is aligned to CA CCSS.  After completing the pilot in March 2019, the team has found Bridges in Mathematics to be an excellent curriculum choice for TK-5 because of its focus, coherence, rigor, mathematical practices, usability and universal access.  In addition, the evaluation of materials focused on the committee’s three essential goals:  support all CUSD students, provide the best access and support for students and parents when teachers are not present, and provide strong support for teachers as they plan, present, and assess instruction and learning.
