Reports:

1.0 Academic Achievement:

1. 1 Present Plan with Corresponding Data which assesses the value of:

  • Intervention Courses

This year, Coronado High School piloted two sections of an intervention course, Foundations of Integrated Math, and Coronado Middle School continues to provide interventions and supports through the ‘Math Lab’ course. The following course descriptions and data samples from first semester indicate both intervention courses are providing valuable support.

The Foundations of Integrated Math course uses Personalized Education Plans with goals written by students with teacher support using CAASPP and MAP data, other academic assessments, social-emotional needs, interests, and career path desires.  To close the achievement gap in mathematics for students enrolled in Foundations of Integrated Math, and to be better prepared for the rigors beyond a high school diploma, the Foundations of Integrated Math course implements a triad approach in order to build students’ capacity to 1) make meaning of mathematics that is conceptually-based, 2) apply concepts and skills to relevant, real-life situations and, 3) build strong procedural fluency.  Overall, Foundations of Integrated Math provides opportunities for students to master mathematics and improve their mindsets about mathematics so that they regard math as a valued, necessary, and exciting life skill.

Math Lab is an intervention course at CMS designed to “fill the gaps” from prior years’ math instruction and boost student confidence in math. This course aims to instill a growth mindset in mathematics, while building number sense, fluency and math comprehension. Students will revisit foundational mathematics, using multiple strategies and representations to build and solidify basic math skills. We will use real-world problem solving to help students make connections with math and everyday situations. As foundational mathematics skills are strengthened and/or mastered, the class will shift more into a supportive role—where students will be pre-taught/re-taught the standards currently being taught in their regular math class.

88% of CMS Math Lab students raised their RIT score in their lowest math category by 2 or more points. The range of points gained for these students in their lowest math category was 4-27. The average gain for these students was 14.7 points. The average national gain for this time period is between 2-3 points.

81% of CMS Math Lab students achieved significant growth (2 – 27 points gained) in Operations and Algebraic Thinking and/or Real and Complex Number Systems. Their average gain in these two math strands was 14.25 points. The average national gain for this time period is between 2-3 points.

3.2 Strengthen programs and expand resources which support the physical and   emotional safety of CUSD staff and students.

  • Emergency Preparedness Protocols Reviewed w CPD

In partnership with the Coronado Police and Fire Departments, CUSD will host a second ‘Active Shooter’ training this month on one of our campuses. The CPD had an opportunity to review our emergency preparedness protocols and plans prior to submitting them to the San Diego County Office of Education.
