6.2  Learning Department Report on CUSD Student Performance on 2018 CAASPP Testing  (Reports)

Background Information:

Shortly before the 2017-2018 school year ended, CUSD students in grades 3-8 and 11 took assessments in English language arts, mathematics, and science as part of the 2018 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) system. The CAASPP testing system is comprised of computer-based tests that assess student progress on adopted CA standards in English language arts/literacy and mathematics, and a pilot test in science that is aligned to the new NGSS standards.

CAASPP exams are part of California’s comprehensive plan for supporting high-quality learning at every school. They are based on California’s new, more challenging academic standards which are designed to help all students graduate ready for college and to pursue a career. These tests included a wider variety of questions than the multiple-choice tests they replaced, requiring students to explain how they solve problems, think critically, and write analytically.

Reports:

2018 CAASPP data reports were publicly released on October 2, 2018. The CAASPP portal https://caaspp.cde.ca.gov/sb2018/Search?lstTestYear=2018 provides school, district, and state results.  Individual CUSD student reports were mailed home to parents of all tested students grades 3-8 and 11 in early August.

Each student score report shows a child’s achievement on CAASPP tests with an overall score for English language arts/literacy and mathematics, with information on different skill areas associated with these subjects. Student score reports show an overall score for the content area and whether or not the score falls in one of the following categories: Standard Not Met, Standard Nearly Met, Standard Met, and Standard Exceeded.

Also included is more specific information for each content area based on Smarter Balanced Claims for each content area. They are:

These claims represent a very different way of reporting student progress from previous Standards Testing and Reporting (STAR) results. In addition, all students in grade 11 will receive a rating indicating college and career readiness via Early Assessment Program (EAP) Status.

Online Parent Guides providing comprehensive guidance by grade and subject are also available (grades 3-5, grades 6-8, grade 11). These guides will have sample questions by grade, sample items explaining academic standards that are addressed, and examples that note the kinds of questions that students must answer correctly to reach each achievement level. Parent Guides are posted at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/caasppssreports.asp.

The presentation of all CUSD data is attached. CUSD administrators and teachers are analyzing results to continue transitions to the state standards and support learning in preschool through grades 12 and beyond.
