6.3  Elementary Grading and Reporting System Update  (Reports)

Background Information:

With the onset of the Common Core State Standards, CUSD revised the elementary report card to align to new standards and first used this revised version in the 2014-15 school year.  As educators are vastly more familiar with these standards and new assessments are now in place, some revisions are needed and have been requested by both teachers and parents.

Reports:

CUSD formed an Elementary Grading Criteria Committee in 2016-17 under the direction of the Learning Department. All elementary administrators, teachers and TOSAs were a part of the committee.  This committee continued to meet during the Fall of the 2017-18 school year and have developed a final version of the report card for grades TK-5.  From grades TK-5, there is consistently with the academic and behavioral scoring keys, performance standards, appearance and language. The one difference that exists within each report card are the specific standards addressed under each learning strand. Attached to this report is a sample of our Third Grade Report Card.

As indicated in our LCAP under Goal 1, Action 7, we have met one (1-7.A) of our five action steps based on our planned actions and services relative to the report card.  We have also made progress towards the remaining four action steps (1-7.B,C,D,E) which include:  developing a common understanding of and criteria for each level of mastery (below, developing, secure, and exceeding) for the key standards, developing a common criteria for assessing and grading for each grade level, provide parents with a parent-friendly guide that will help navigate the new report card, and implement a teacher-friendly electronic reporting system.

Relative to our progress made towards our action plan as it relates to the elementary grading and reporting system, future steps for grading/reporting have been identified:

  • Determine what mastery and other levels look like for each standard and what criterion is used to make that determination.
  • Develop Special Education and English Learner grading guidelines (joint project with Student Services and Learning Dept.)
  • Revise/simplify parent guidance document for grading and reporting
  • Provide parents with a guide to the learning progression/rigor within a standard over time
  • Synergy produced report card (contract with SDCOE to provide teachers access to the Synergy report cards this Spring 2018)
Financial Impact:

One-time cost of $3000.00 ($500.00 per grade level) for SDCOE to create the online, fillable templates that will be available in Synergy.

LEARNING: Integrate personalized learning with assessment methods that will prepare all students for academic and vocational success:
1. Standards Aligned Core Curriculum, Assessment and Instruction, 7. Grading and Reporting System, 8. Develop/Implement High Quality Grading and Reporting System
