Coronado Unified School District’s annual cycle of strategic planning meetings for all CUSD sites and departments began in January for the District, with all other site and department annual meetings following in February:
- District, January 12, 2016
- Coronado High School, February 2, 2016
- Silver Strand Elementary, February 9, 2016
- Village Elementary, February 11, 2016
All site Strategic Plans were approved by School Site Councils.
Due to the January 2016 transition of site administration at Coronado Middle School (CMS), the CMS Strategic Planning process occurred internally over several weeks with participation by the entire staff. The final CMS Strategic Plan was also approved by its School Site Council.
At each annual meeting, Strategic Planning Teams were comprised of representative members of parents, the community, and staff. Students were included on District, Coronado Middle, and High Schools’ annual meetings. A CUSD governing board member was in attendance as observer at all annual meetings. Claudia Gallant, Senior Director of Learning, Superintendent Jeff Felix, and site administrators, and identified staff facilitated these meetings.
The entire CUSD Governing Board participated in the full-day annual meeting, with various shareholders represented during the morning session. The activities centered on analysis and feedback of the first full year of data based on the LCAP metrics in the each of the three goal areas of Learning, Communication, and Support. All resources, activities, and feedback from the District Strategic Planning Annual Meeting can be found at http://coronadousd.net/strategicplans/district-strategic-planning-2016/.
At each site annual meeting, participants listened to presentations on goal successes and discussed needs and considerations for next steps. Common themes present at site annual meetings were student achievement/learning, academic and social-emotional supports, implementation of new standards, interventions, special populations, communication, and opportunities for students. At Coronado High School (CHS), outcomes for this year’s meeting were to identify powerful learning experiences and opportunities at CHS, understand the structure, benefits, and challenges of the current online learning programs offered at CHS, and to determine best practices in structure, schedules, and advising of students for online learning next year and beyond at CHS. The CHS Strategic Planning day also included staff and students of its unique programs: Palm Academy, Student Organized Learning Opportunities (SOLO), and Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA).
Site strategic planning committees worked with administration to write goals aligned to the three Board Goals. Pending Governing Board approval, all CUSD Strategic Plans will be available on the main District website at www.coronadousd.net and under the Learning and Instruction link, as well as each site’s website under Strategic Plan. Additionally, schools will post a one-page summary of site strategic planning on the school website. The District’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) serves as the District Strategic Plan, which is current in draft form and available at http://coronadousd.net/lcap/. The LCAP will be approved by the Governing Board at the June 23, 2016 meeting, and subsequently posted on the District website.
The LCAP, site strategic plans, and other CUSD plans guide the work of CUSD and each department or school site for the next school year and beyond. Next year’s District Strategic Planning cycle will begin in January 2017. Strategic Plans were provided to the Board under separate cover and are available for the public to see at the District Office.
